Your Story vs Your Reality, Riding the Coat Tails of Life

A Lesson I Think About Every Day

Our past makes us who we are today, no doubt about it. Every experience, emotion, thought and deed create the tapestry of you and brings you to this exact moment in time. It’s your story.

Yesterday, I received an email from an old friend of mine. We hadn’t spoken in nearly 35 years. He told me the reader’s digest of his story, his glories and his tragedies, his dreams and his woes. Then he asked for help. I was touched that he confided in me.  I thought a lot about it last night. I reveled in his past achievements and felt the pains of his divorce and disease through his words. And I contemplated how I could help him.

And I realized that I needed to be cruel to be kind.

Your story is simply that, your story. And the longer you ride the coat tails of the problems in your life and let it drag you down, the longer you won’t move forward in your life.

Here is what I have to say.

Thank you for sharing your story.

So what? Now what?

What do you want the reality of TODAY to be?

And what do you want the reality of TOMORROW to bring?

Excuses?

The excuses of yesterday have no place in the dreams of today. I’m sorry for your past, bring the lessons forward, but close the door and move on to your future.

Too many people wallow in the tragedies of days gone by and obviously by recounting them endlessly, get something out of it, sympathy? attention? rationalization for future immobility? An excuse to not participate in the rest of your life?

Take a serious look at where you are today, at this exact moment in time. Take stock in what you are, who you are and what you have. Now, decide what you want to be, do, and have next in your life.

Choose and move.

It doesn’t have to be big but it DOES have to be forward.  I tell myself this every day and whenever it becomes easy to be complacent.

Not everyone has stories of loss and tragedy, missed connections and regret. In fact, some people have just the opposite. A great epic feat they have accomplished. Fantastic!

Great accomplishment? Celebrate…keep going

But then they ride those coat tails into the sunset. They talk for the next 50 years about the one accomplishment they had in life.

And I say the same.

Thank you for sharing your story.

So what? Now what?

I’m thrilled that 50 years ago you stood on the top of the world, circumnavigated in a rowboat or walked from Canada to Mexico. But what about today? The same questions apply.

What do you want the reality of TODAY to be?

What do you want the reality of TOMORROW to bring?

What do you want the reality of tomorrow to be?

Yesterday’s accomplishments are fantastic, create more. Build on them, teach others, take the next step up, keep going. Your days are numbered. Don’t live them in the past whether glories or failures. Don’t let them be your excuses for today.

Teach….be inspiring to others, and continue to build on your accomplishments

Great post…a “good” kick in the seat of the pants. Inspired to look at the reality of today and take action to create tomorrow’s.

This is a great blog post. Thanks for the inspiration. This is what I have been ‘preaching’ about lately! You’ve only got one shot. The right time is now.

Myself, I am a filmmaker up until now I have created small films but they have been lots of fun and a great experience.

Now, I am working on a grand project with another filmmaker. A feature film. This is my adventure. Please check out these sites and follow our progress as we work up to our crowd funding campaign!
