I went out to walk the dog yesterday. No, not my dog. I don’t have a dog. I travel WAY too much to have a pet… or children or houseplants for that matter. Plus, I wouldn’t have the slightest clue what to do with children or plants. Anyways….it was someone else’s dog…not important.
But as we walked, I started thinking… about the book and how much it will help people travel better and how the New York Times should interview me and how that would go……
First, I swing on in for the interview in true adventure style!
NYT: So Mantagirl …what was the genesis of Travel Like A Pro, the newest NYT best seller? (a girl can dream can’t she?)
MG: (that’s me, Mantagirl by the way). Since we are away from home about 300 days a year and have been traveling more than two decades, people are constantly asking us about travel. They want to know how to do it better and cheaper and how to make the process less insane. We became sad that people were thinking twice about traveling because it’s such a “hassle” these days. We didn’t want people to stop traveling because of that. We KNEW that there were great strategies for taking out the stress out and felt compelled to share them and help people live a more satisfying life.
NYT: But isn’t travel much easier nowadays with all the information on the internet? Can’t people simply Google and go?
MG: Actually, the internet has made it MORE complicated. People tell us that almost every day. There is so much information out there that people are throwing up their hands. It’s impossible to separate truth from fiction. There are so many choices it creates brain freeze. People are running BACK to travel agents to save them now. Travel Like a Pro is like having a personal travel agent at your fingertips 24/7.
NYT: That’s fantastic! But Travel Like a Pro is different. It goes beyond the travel agent doesn’t it?
MG: Very perceptive. Yes. (ok, folks, remember this is MY fantasy interview) What we hear MOST is about the hassle of getting to and from the vacation and this is where we put our focus. I mean, who talks about getting to the airport and how to get through TSA with your sanity intact? Travel Like A Pro does!
Too often we hear that people don’t want to go to some of the great exotic destinations of the world because they are too far. That’s what makes them so cool and desirable… so what travelers need are strategies to get them there in one piece.
NYT: That’s a great spin on a travel guide Mantagirl! Give us one of your tips.
MG: One of the great letdowns of travel is coming home. So make the “coming home” day a part of your vacation. Consider it STILL a vacation day. Have someone prep your house, clean and leave dinner and a bottle of wine for you. Spend an extra $50, do it! Don’t walk in the door dreading the mail…toss your bags down and enjoy your evening. Enjoy reliving the great times you had and perhaps spend the evening planning the next one! Let tomorrow come…well…. tomorrow.
NYT: Great advice Mantagirl! How can we help you spread the word about this book?
MG: Thanks for asking. You can Share the link to the sales page on FB, Twitter and email it to all your friends:
NYT: So Mantagirl, what’s next for you and Sharkman?
MG: Well, we love to write and share information that will help people. So our next quest is a one year around the world odyssey. The purpose is to show people strategies for an adventurous lifestyle. You don’t need to have lots of money to travel and adventure, you just need to think outside the box a little. AND you need to get over your fear. Our plan is to do 12 locations for one month each with “no money down”. We’ll climb, dive, hike, adventure, give back and explore an entire year. You can follow us through our blog as we devise and share our strategies. And at the end, we will publish a book.
NYT: We certainly will look forward to that and will definitely follow your adventures by signing up to get your blogs and sharing with friends and having you back for another interview. Good luck! And don’t forget, everyone, to grab your copy of Travel Like A Pro before Monday midnight to get the special Introductory pricing PLUS an exclusive invite to a one hour Travel Like A Pro Q&A webcast with Mantagirl and Sharkman.
